HAWKE'S BAY AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
The annual show of this society was opened on Wednesday. The first day, being entirely devoted to judging, possessed very little interest for the general public, and the attendance was confined to the judges, stewards, and those specially interested in the exhibits. The judging went on slowly, a portion of the sheep only being disposed of on the first day, but that it was done carefully is shown by the general satisfaction that ha* been expressed with the decisions. Yesterday the attendance was ve r y large, the number present being estimated at from 3000 to 4000. There appeared to be some little difficulty among the attendant* as to what those arriving at the show before mid-day were tn be charged on entering. Thn 10 56 *r«>n (mm Na:.*ier was crowded with ptrsori* who had paid 3a for a ticket which was said to iaclude admittance to the show grounds. On arriving at the gate, however, tbey were required to pay half-a crown, the usual charge for visitors before mid-day. With this little exception, however, all the arrangements were admirable, and it says much for the management of our railway that s»«h a large number of traveller l ), both from up country and from Napier, were conveyed to the show grounds and back again without any apparent difficulty, and closely in accordance with the time table. The Artillery Band was in attendance during the afternoon, and their excellent music added much to the enjoyment of those present. Of course there was the usual compliment of games and amusements of various kinds on the grounds, and so Foon as the visitor's interest in the exhibits was satisfied there was ample material for amusement and recreation.
The number and quality of the exhibits surpassed anything we have previously had in the district, and the members of the society are to be congratulated upon the unqualified success which has attended this year's show. The sheep exhibits, from their quantity and excellence, claim a first notice. The merino exhibits were the finest ever shown in Hawke's Biy, and the work of the judges must have been an onerous oue from the uniform excellence of the sheep exhibited. Mr D. McLean took both the champion cups iv this class, and very deservedly so. Among his exhibits, especially in classes 56 ami 59. were some of the finest sheep which nave yet been exhibited in this province. For length and fineness of wool tbey could not be surpassed, and general surprise was expressed that «tich excellence in hretdiog had been attained in ho comua<atively short * tinv\ In the long wools Mr Tanner van> the most fal exbioior, tnking three of the special prizes. The Judges appeared to have some difficuty in awarding the prize for the champion ewe, and appended «, note to their decision, to the following effect : — " We would suggest that in future no entries be required for champion prises, and that the judges be left to select the beet sheep in the yard."
'I he cattle exhibited were excellent in kind and quality, and attracted a very considerable amount of attention. Mr McPlardy was the successful competitor, taking the champiouship for a bull of any breed, and also for a cow of any breed. The Key. S. Williams and Mr Ormond also obtained a share of honors in thia part of the show.
Among the thoroughbred horses Jav'lin again held bis own in the four-year-old and upward class. In class B Mr McLean's Flying Scud appropriated the honors. The show of draught horses was large, and included some magnificent animals, but Mr J. Heslop's Robin Adair was again triumphant, being awarded the championship of bis class.
The show of implements was extensive and good. Mr A. Jones, of Waipukurau, again took first honors, and was closely followed by Messrs Corskie and Robb, of Waipawa.
Among the carriage exhibits Mr Foster, of Napier, took the only prize awarded, for a double-seated buggy. Mr G. Fuulknor had also notne Bpltndidly made phaetons and buggies on the ground.
In the provincial produce portion of the show there were some remarkably good exhibits. Mr Wellwood took a first prize for fresh butter. Mr Swan exhibited several specimens of his ale, and for one exhibit brewed from locally grown malt and bops be obtained a second prize. He also obtained first prires for hops grown in the Wairoa, and for malt grown by Mr Joll, of Hastings. In the wool exhibits Mr R.
P. Williams took first honors both for merino and longwools. Among the extra exhibits in the produce tent there were several that deterve a much more extended notice than we are able to eive. The stall furnished by the Kaiapoi Woollen Company at last year's show attracted a large amount of attention and prai-ie, but their exhibits of this season show a very marked advance upon those of last year. Their exhibits have been carefully selected, and give a good idea of the variety of goods made by this firm. Tbey show tweeds excellent in style, and manufacture, hose, mauds, serges, flannels, yarns, and also a number of garments made up in their establishment. The remarkable feature of these garments, as pointed out by the courteous agent of the company, is that they went into the mill as raw material, paseed through all the processes of sorting, dyeing, weaving, finishing, &c, and were turned out of the establishment as we see them upon the stall. This splendid lot of exhibits have been purchased by our enterpring townsmen, Messrs Price aud Innes, and will now form a part of their already large md varied stock. Mr McDonald, of Meanee, exhibits some capital specimens of leather made on his establishment, and well deserves the commendation of the judges to tbs effect that it was a really good assortment, and well deserved a first prize. Mr McVay's display of saddlery attracted marked attention, aud received a warm commendation from tbe judges. The exhibits both in the poultry and dof« departments were indifferent.
In ihe afternoon a large portion of the visitors were attracted to the course in front of the grand-stand, wbere a number of leaping matches took place. For the fence and water jump there were a number of entries, and Mr 0. C. Murray on Jack Sprat* took the prize. Mr Murray also took a prize of £10 offered for the bent jumper over fences, hurdles, and wafer. For the high jvimp Mr Gilpin's Comet was the successful competitor.
Mr Gilhes had a number of mechanical models in a tent on the ground, and was favored with a fair i mount of patronage. The following is a full list of the awards; — SHEEP. MBEINO3. Judges—Messrs J.
