A man named John Price is supposed to have committed suicide on Sunday evening by jumping off a punt at Alberton into the Clarence river.
At the City Court this morning William Alexander was charged with attempting to commit suicide by taking laudanum. The accused said he took it for special purposes. The bench bound him over in bis own surety for £50, and ordered the insertion in the newspapers of a notice cautioning publicans against sup* plying him with drink* A case of some importance to building societies was decided by Mr Simpson, R.M., to-day who delivered judgment in the Permanent Building Society v Rose, nonsuiting the plaintiffs, His Worship stating his opinion with regard to the first item claimed, namely that the defendant should refund the profits credited to him during the year 1879-80, that the amount was not recoverable being based upon opinions and calculations admitting it to be only approximately correct. The second item claimed was not, His Worship considered, the ascertained proportion of the deficiency for which the defendant would be liable ; and, lastly, the balance-sheet upon which the claim was made had not been audited in terms of the regulation, and could thus be in no way binding upon the defendant.
