THE HOTEL AT MAKATOKU.
[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sib, —There is a great deal of agitation up here in reference to the removal of the hotel from Kopua to Makatoku station yard, and petitions are but and will be largely signed against the removal. It will be a monstrous thing to allow an irresponsible {licensed house at or in a station yard, with a night train arriving, and so many other chances of accidents. I could understand a refreshment stall, with leave to sell at stated hours, and under strict arrangements with the Public Works Department; but to allow an ordinary licensed house a site in the yard seems a mistake. It is, however* fortunate that the hew Licensing Act came into force on last Saturday, and under which there will be little possibility of the removal beiog granted, so we shall be saved the evil. Meantime I hope the canvassers will go on with their petitions, and be prepared, when the time comes, to present such a petition as under the new Act will compel the Licensing Committee to refuse the application.—l am, &c,
