The soi-vices on Sunday next at the opening of the Hastings Catholic Church vrill be as follows :—First Mass at 8 o'clock a.m., second Mass at 11 o'clock, and Vespers at 2.15 o'clock p.m. A special train leaves Napier for Hastings on Sunday aD 10 a.m. The Artillery Band will play at the Spit this evening at 8 o'clock the following programme;— Quick step, " Burnished and Bright;" quadrille, "The King's Dragoons;" waltz, "Lucky Stars;" polka, " Sweet Smiles ;" galop, " The Scout;" God save the Queen. The members will meet at the band-room at 7.15 p.m. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before H. Eyre Kenny, Esq., R.M., Wilhelm H. Skipper was charged with the larceny of a silver watch of tha value of £4. He was further charged with the larceny of a silver watch of the value of £5. Accused pleaded not guilty, and, at the request of the police, was remanded until Monday next. Entries for the Napier- Rowing Club's scratch fours, to be pulled on Saturday afternoon next on the Tutaekuri, must be sent in to the secretary by this evening at the Criterion Hotel. The opening of the boating season will take plaae on Saturday by the usual procession of the boats of the several club.", to be followed by scratch matches. At the Theatre Royal last evening " The Galley Slave " was repeated, and gave such thorough satisfaction that Mr Leake and the principals of the company were called before the curtain at the close of each act. To-night the drama entitled " The Lost Diamonds," founded upon Diltnas , popular Btory " The Three Musketeers," will be produced, Mr Leake sustaining the character of D'Artagnan. A seven-romed house at Puketapu was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. At the time of the accident the house had no one in it, Mr and Mrs Hughes, the occupiers, being absent. The house was an old one, and was the property of Mr John Heslop, and some years ago was the residence of Mr Mi Hutchinson. The house was insured for £200, and the furniturs for £50, in the National office. There had been no fire lighted within the premises for some weeks, and the origin of the conflagration is unknown. No attempts were made to save the building by the neighbors, as it was known to be unoccupied. Some misapprehension appears to exist "with respect to the intention of the Racing Club to hold a race meeting atPakowhaion Boxing Day. It having been intimated to the committee of the Racing Club that there would be no race meeting as in former years at Havelock, it was decided to hold a meeting on Boxing Day at Pakowhai in order to keep up the usual annual sports enjoyed at that season. Subsequently to the announcement of this intention, a public meeting was called at Hastings, when a resolution was carried censuring the Racing, Club for its action in this matter, and it was also decided to hold a race meeting on the Hastings course. What claim racing at Hastings on Boxing Day has to be considered " the old established local meeting , " at Havelock ie jus,t now puzzling the committee of the Racing Club. the half-yearly meeting of the Working Men's Club, held last evening, there was a large attendance of members. Mr G. H. Wooten, the President, occupied the chair. The report of the committee, which represented the club as in a fairly prosperous condition, but suffering from the nonpayment of a number of subscriptions, was read. The following ballance-sheet was then submitted to the meeting:—Receipts, £1060 Is 4d, including £353 2s 4d for refreshments ; and the expenditure £1043 10s 3d. The assets were £1316 6s sd, including club property £900 and furniture £237 2s 4d. The liabilities were £1005 6s sd. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A complete set of rules for the guidence of members were then discussed and adopted. The following office-bearers -were then elected:—President, Mr J. Parker; Treasurer, Mr T. W. Bear (reelected) ; Committee, Messrs Gillespie, Waterworth, Wundram, Hodgson. P. Bear, R. Williams, White, Scorgie, Wootton, and Forster; Auditors, Messrs Bee and Garner. Votes of thanks were then passed to the steward and stewardess, and to the chairman, and the meeting terminated.
Mr W. H. Leake in " The Lost Diamonds" to-night at the Theatre Koyal at 8. Mr E. Lyndon will sell to-morrow a quantity of household furniture, at 11 a.m. Messrs Banner and Liddle will sell tomorrow clothing, &c, at 11 a.m. Tenders for renting a grazing paddock near (Jlive Square must be sent in by tomorrow. Tenders for alterations and additions to a house the property of Mr Q-. H. Swan, must be sent in by to-morrow. Messrs Brooking and Dobson advertise a number of properties to let and for sale, also money to lend. The Lydia Howarde Comic Opera and Burlesque Company will open in Napier on the sth October. Messrs Monteith and Co., will sell potatoes at the breastwork, Spit on Saturday. A brown mare is impounded at Taradale. The funeral of the late Mrs Bowerman takes place to-morrow morning, mass commencing at 7.30. A number of now advertisements will be found in our " Wanted " column.
