THE WAIPAWA ELECTION.
(To the Editor of the Daily Tbiegeaph.] Sir,—l notice in your issue of yesterday a letter signed " Another Woodvillian," purporting to be from a Woodvillp settler, speaking somewhat disparagingly of the conduct of Mr Ormond in regard to the welfare of the Bush settlements, aud extolling that of his pet candidate, Mr W. 0. Smith. He says, " as a member of the County Council Mr Smith has been extremely energetic in obtaining grants of money for the purpose of road making, bridge making, &c, in this otherwise neglected district." Would "Another Woodvillian" kindly inform us of these particular grants of money obtained bj Mr Smith for the purpose of "road making, &c," the amounts obtained, the source from whence they were derived, and the amount of rates raised in these particular districts. Also, what action, in company with Mr Gaisford, Mr Smith may have taken in the Council to have an equality of rates levied in respect to the Bush land occupied by the small farmer, and the cleared land adjoining occupied by tbe large land owner. Its all very well to attempt to raise " weather cocks" to unduly elevated positions to the tune of " working man's friend," but I am ol opinion that the Bush settlers have not allowed their mental faculties to become so deranged as to be 1. from the right path by such consummate balderdash as that in the letter here referred to. lam at a loss to know how " Another Woodvillian" can be ignorant of the benefits tbe settlements have derived from the strenuous exertions of Mr Ormond on behalf of these settlements, and can only account for his activeness by the probability of bis being one of that particular class who already have their mouths open for the " good things," and then be the first to turn round upon the hand that feeds them.—l am, _~ Bush Settler. September 28th, 1881.
