A smart shock of earthquake was felt in town at 11.55 this morniug. Mr Frank Pell has been appointed the Hawke's Bay agent for tho Mutual Life Assurance Company of Australia. Messrs "Fortune and Black have arranged with the secretary of the Agricultural Society and the jockey Club to provide luncheons on the ground during the show and race days. The following cases are set down for hearing at the sitting of the District Court to-morrow:—A. R. W. Lascelles v. C. Helander, and John Jeffares v. National Bank of New Zealand. The address of condolence with Mrs Garfield passed by the Napier Borough Council was forwarded to Mr G. W. Griffin, the American Consul at Auckland, and His Worship the Mayor baa received the following telegraphic reply :—" Tour message will with pleasure be forwarded to Washington." The Government are advertising for drilled aotive young men for pervice in the Armed Constabulary. In other places a good number have enrolled themselves, but at Napier up to to-day only seven men have presented themselves who came up to the standard required, many others being rejected. The Union S. S. Company have notified that the through steamers between Auckland and Sydney will not be continued during the quarantine restrictions, but that a special steamer will ply between the two porta every sixteen days; also that visi'ors to Melbourne for the Cup day will leave Kapier on the 21st October, and be transhipped at Wellington, arriving in Melbourne on the 30th of October. A somewhat serious accident happened to a man named Gordon this morniug. Ho appears to have been driving a spring cart laden with chaff down Hastings-street, when a portion of the harness gave way, allowing the shafts to fall. Gordon was thrown out, and one of the wheeln passed over bis neck. It was thought at first that

his injuries would prove serious, but on being taken to into Mr Well, ana, and examined by Dr. Hitching*, it was discovered that he had not suffered very seriously. Referring to tbe death of Mr W. 3eft_ Moorhouse, the Dunedin Echo says: — " Another of the pioneers of the colony has , joined the majority. . . One by one those who in the " blue-shirt" days fought to pre.-*s on the colony are passing away. Let us hope that our young people will not forget the battles and struggles of the early settlers, but that they will remember their duties to New Zealand and to those who come after us. Mr Moorhouse's children can in their grief have this consolation that, though dead to sense, in the memory of the colonists their father still lives." If Mr DeLias' venture of this week at the Theatre Royal has not been a decided success* it is certainly not on account of any want of merit either in the actorS or the pieces performed. The two pieces produced up to the present time possess all the elements of success; in variety of incident aud striking situations the piece performed last nigh-c excelled "My Partner." There has certainly been nothing wanting on tho part of the company to make Mr Leake's engagement a success; Mr DeLias is well known throughout the colony as a mc-sb careful and successful caterer for the public amusement, and the company at j; sent under him is, taking it all round, iue best that has visited Napier. Mr Leake himself is a sound and accomplished actor, nnd, although his representations have not been largely attended, he has gained in favor with the audience at each performance. His Sydney Norcott last night was a powerful piec*** of acting, representing admirably i.he sua': ;ngs and final triumph of thelnver whose love was too great to be selfish. Cicely Blame is a somewhat trying character, but Miss Watt Tanner sustained the part in a mar.ner which stamps her as an actress of very considerable merit. Miss' Maggie Knight, as the much tried Fran-,, ceHca Remini, acted with her usual care and success. Miss Adelle, as a somewhat sentimental and wayward young wife, acted with remarkable vivacity. The Oliver Oliphant of Mr Welsh was a thorough buccess, as wbb the Fitts of Mr O'Brien. Tonight "The Galley Slave" will be repeated. Mr W. H. Leake in " The Galley Slave ' at the Theatre Royal to-night at 8. Messrs H. Monteith and Co. will sell tomorrow, at the Harse Bazaar, a section of land near the Napier railway station, at 2 p.m. Mr E. Lyndon will sell on Friday next furniture, &c. A few men of good character are wanted for the Armed Constabulary. The half-yearly meeting of the Working Men's Club will be held this evening at 8. Mr Sutton invites the electors to meet him at the Theatre Royal on Monday evening next. Messrs Blythe and Co. are selling girls Btraw hats at 6d each. The sire Pohokura will stand this season; Messrs H. Monteith and Co.'s usual stock aud produce sale will be held at the Horse Bazaar on Saturday. Messrs Kennedy nndGillman have a consignment of produce to arrive from Dunedin per schooner Zior, which will be sold by auction on arrival. Tenders are required for additions to the Napier district school. A number of new advertisements will be found in our " Wanted" column.
