CHRISTCHURCH.
September 27.
Mr E. C. J. Stevens will not present himself for re-election. Private business is the reason alleged. The Sydenham Borough Council passed a resolution last night to bring the whole matter of the local railway strike before the head of the Railway Department, or if necessary the Minister for Public Works. The City Council declined to see a deputation from the strikers. Mills for dressing flax fibre to be used in paper making have been opened at Amberley.
