SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATIONS.
The examination for the scholarships presented by fche City companies for children in attendance afc fche London Board Schools is said to have been very satisfactory, but, as the examiner said, some of the answers would afford amusing problems to those who believe thafc there is always a good reason for a wrong answer. Some, of the specimens are ludicrous enough : —
" The climate of England determines to be rather unhealthy on account of its having so many smells and stinks, such as Tanners, and many othprs." (l The Old World natur'illy was Europe, and, qow the New World is Europe, Asia, 4b0."
'' Buenos is in Germany; Ayres in France."
The history papers contain statements still more startlings — "Milton wrote a sensible poem, called ' Canterbury Tale 3.' " "Henry 11, got drinking intoxicating liquors until he was commonly called drunk."
" Magna Charta was ordered by the king to be beheaded. He fled to Italy, but was captured and executed." One boy described Henry 11. aB doing penance for his share in Becket's death by walking barefoot, and receiving " wacks with a birch."
