THE BUNYIP IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
The famous bunyip, or some other extraordinary animal, has turned up in South Australia in the vicinity of a small salt lake about a mile and a half from Mr Forster's, on the mail road, nearly midway between Robe and Beachport. According to the Border "Watch, " the lake, which lies betweon Mr Forster's and the sea, and is a little over half a mite from the shore, is about five acres in extent, and is surrounded by a dense gi'owfch of the ordinary coast scrub and timber, and a large quantity of what is known as saltwater tea-tree grows in it. Its situation, as well as the thick growth of scrub in and around it makes the lake one of the most secluded spots that can be found in the locality. Occasionally for the last four years, it is said, and rather frequently of late, several residents at Mr Forster's have seen, apparently feeding at the side of the water, a large animal of darkbrown color, which, when disturbed, plunged into the lake and disappeared. From the description giveii it appears to be amphibious in its habits, but the persons who have seen it were evidently too timid to make much inquiry. It is said to stand about two feet high, and to be a good deal longer than a Newfoundland dog. It moves on four legs, and leaves in the soft ground at the side of the lake footprints consisting of four claw marks. It makes a noise like the roaring of a bull, which noise has often been heard at a distance when the beast itself was not visible. No one can even conjecture what the creature may be, and some are inclined to fancy it is the last surviving one of some species of Australian animal that is destined to become extinct with it. It is proposed to organise a strong party with dogs, • either from Beaohfort or Forster's, to have a good search for the monster, and, if possible, secui'e it dead or alive.
