By the steamer Southern Cross, wbjch arrived from Fiji to-day, the following items of Island uewa are to hand :— The detached equadron arrived at Levuka on September 4. The inhabitants exerted themselves to the utmost to entertain the visitors. The local cricket club were beaten by the squadron cricketers, but the Levuka Rifle Association gained a victory over the visitors. The court of inquiry into the wreck of the Meg Mereilles blamed Captain Hughes for keeping his vessel on the starboard tack instead of going round. The Rotumah natives are tired of annexation, and are petitioning the Qneen for the restoration of their independence.
The cocoanut groves at Savu Savu are being devastated by a large insect, which eats off the tops of the trees. A number of laborers have arrived from New Hebridees for the Colonial Sugar Company's works at Suva, the new capital. Mr Lambert has arrived at Levuka with his family in a 800-ton yacht.
