EDUCATION BOARD.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20. The Board met at 10.15. Present: Messrs Ormond (in the chair), Sutton, Harding, Dobson, Tanner, J. N. Williams, and Eusaell. CORRESPONDENCE. From the chairman of the Clive School Committee, recommending that Isaac Jeffrey be appointed junior pupil teacher. Resolved to postpone consideration of the matter until the question of scholarships have been dealt with. From the secretary of the Frasertown Committee, asking if, in the event of the present Committee resigning, the Board would promote another election. Resolved that the writer be informed that there was no provision in the Act to enable the Board to act under the circumstances. From the chairman of the Frasertown School Committee, asking the Board to appoint a new teacher to the school. Resolved that the request be acceeded to on the usual terms as to attendance. From Rev. S. Williams, offering a site for an extension of the school accommodation at Gisborne. The secretary stated that Mr Cotterill had given it as bis opinion that the Board could not legally build upon ground conveyed upon such terms. Resolved that Mr Williams be informed of the opinion of the Board's solicitor. From the Kaikora School Committee, stating that an acre of ground adjoining the schoolhouse could be secured for £60, and that they were willing to subascribe £30 if the Board would supplement it with £30. Mr Harding moved that the offer of the Committee be accepted, and that the Board supplement the amount named by a vote of £30, Carried. From the Onga Onga School Committee, asking for a grant to fence in the school site at Makaretu. Granted. From the Chairman of the Matawhero School Committee, referring to certain difficulties that had arisen in the working of the Committee. Resolved that the chairman be informed that the Board regret that it is unable to assist in the matter. From the Napier School Committee, asking for a vote of £82 10s to complete the furnishing of the room formerly occupied by the infants. Resolved that the Board carry out the work at a sum not to exceed £82 10s. From the same, in reference to several deficiences in the new infant school and asking for a grant of £25 them good, also enclosing a report of the architect on the alleged deficiencies. The secretary informed the Board that many of these requirements would have been attended to if the chairman of the Committee had not neglected several engagements which were made for the purpose of looking into them. He would venture to state to the Board that the rate of payments to this school was higher than to any school in the district. Mr Dobson said that the fact was that the school had been placed in the hands of the Committee in an incomplete state, and they had no money to complete it, and of course they had to come to the Board. The Beard agreed to supply a number of the things required, and indicated a number of articles that the Committee would have to supply. From the master of the Norsewood school, asking for a remittance of £2 10s which he claimed as due to him for teaching Neil Friberg. The Board resolved that the payment could not be made, as the master had received sufficient payment for his time. From the Ormondville Committee, thanking the Board for the grant for alterations, and stating that the work would be carried on without delay. From the Ormondville Committee, recommending Mr Rogers for appointment as teacher. The secretary to the Board stated that he had received information from the Inspector-General to the effect that Mr Rogers was a certificated teacher, and had accordingly agreed to the appointment of Mr Rogers subject to the approval of the Board. This action was approved by the Board. From Patutabi, stating that the subscribers to the school house would not accept the grant of £8 for the erection of a chimney on the conditions of the Board's letter. From the Porangahau Committee, to the effect that the chimney on the teacher's residence was unsafe, and asking for a grant to enable them to have it rebuilt. In connection with this a communication from the Board's architect was read, stating that it would be necessary that the chimney should be rebuilt.

Resolved to authorise the erection of a new chimney. From the Taradale Committee, applying lor a veutilator in the Meauee school. Deferred until arrangements had been made for necessary alterations to teacher's residence. From Mr Lysnar, late teacher at Te Arai, claiming compensation for loss of fruit from his garden taken possession of by the natives. Resolved that the receipt of the letter be acknowledged. From Mr Cripps, tender for erection of schoolhouse at Wainui. Accepted. From Woodville, applying that the master's salary for the September quarter be paid on the June average. It having been pointed out that the difference would only be a few shillings the Board declined to entertain the application. From Waerang-i-hiki, recommending the appointment of Mr Ingpen as teacher. Approved. SCHOLARSHIPS. It was decided to grant scholarships to Norman Grubb and James Cowell in class C, and to Leslie Ellis in class B. (Left Sitting.)
