WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.
This Day. Present: Crs. Johnston (Chairman), Dillon Mackersey, Smith, Rathbone, and Herrick. SPECIAL BUSINESS. Cr. Smith's motion, of which notice was given at last meeting re taking over the main road from Waipukurau to the southern boundary of the Eparaima riding, was seconded by Cr. Mackersey and carried. Cr Smith gave further notice for a special meeting on next Council day to confirm the above resolution. ORDINARY MEETING. The minutes of tbe previous meeting were confirmed, and the inward correspondence was read as follows : — Letter and account of £1 from W. Jones for removing a tree off the Woodville road to enable the coach to pass. Passed for payment. Circular letter from Under Colonial Secretary, requesting statement of Council's liabilities and assets at 31st March last. The clerk was instructed to reply. From Mr Guy, solicitor, on behalf of Mr Collins, Patangata, offering to determine the dispute between Mr Collins and the Council re compensation for tresspass to gravel pits by arbitration. After some discussion a motion by Cr. Mackersey, seconded by Cr. Smith, was carried accepting these terms. Cr. Johnston was requested to appoint arbitrators on bebalf of the Council. From V. T. Hitchings, declining to reopen the public pound on his Sherwood property. From the Wairarapa County Council signifying the intention of that body to establish a ferry service |between Eketabuna and Woodville at a cost of £125. The consideration of the question was postponed. From E. Harwood, resigning his appointment as rate collector to the Council. On a letter being read from the County Solicitor, in reply to a letter from the Council that a payment of £50 as gratuity as proposed to Mr Henry Arrow for services as licensing clerk could not be legally made, it was resolved that the Council petition the General Government to remunerate Mr Arrow. A petition was read from the ratepapers of Makaretu asking tv have a bridge constructed over the ravine leading to their sections, and offering financial and other assistance in carrying out the work. The matter was referred to the road overseer. In answer to Cr. Smith, the Chairman said a sum of £830 had been placed on the Government estimates for the maintenance of the Seventy-mile Bush road. {For continuation of news seefourthpage.)
