August 30. At the inquest on Dewar, a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Skerret, alias Black. A large public meeting was held last night to consider the dry dock question. The Mayor presided. The following resolutions were carried unanimously: — " That a dock suitable for vessels of every class should be erected without delay ia

Wellington, and that this port, not having the requisite accommodation for shipping, is detrimental not only to tbe interests of Wellington but those of tbe colony at large ; that Wellington possesses every advantage and natural facility for such work, her port being centrally situated in the colony, and the finest harbor in the world placed on the high road of commerce between Australia and the European and American Continents; that both the Harbor Board and City Council heartily join together in forming a dry dock in connection witb the Te Aro reclamation, and that both works should be commenced as soon as possible ; that the Harbor Board, not having assets to borrow money on to build a dock, the City Council at once enter into an agreement with the Harbor Board to build a dock in connection with the Te Aro reclamation, and that the requisite sum for both works should be borrowed on both land and dock, aud an arrangement entered into that each pay interest on the money for such special work, the Harbor Board retaining the right to redeem the dock, and sufficient land for the proper use and working of the same at some future time when prepared."
