THE LAND LAWS OF IRELAND.
In a recently published letter, Lor 1 Talbot do Malahide says :— " Some n-b----eentee proprietors in Trclanrl suggest fcb»' the Government shonH purchase fchei' estates if tfv-y depreciate them by their pmposerl settU-Mient of t!io Itinrl question. 7 do not dispuf" the justice of their claim but allow me to put in a plea also on behalf of those who have felt it their duty to reside upon their estates, although lander! property in Ireland does not hold out tho same inducements as in other parts of the kingdom. The residents generally have no other source of income, and they are sub ject to a multitude of annoyances from which absentees are free. I am loth to speak of myself, but T think it right to mention that ray family have possessed our estates for 700 years, since we succeeded to Torquil the Dane. We have survived few confiscations—one in tho time of Cromwell, and another in William's time —and we little expected that our fate would bo sealed by a soi disant Liberal Government. I hav«> never raised my rents, and until a short time since I could boast of an attached and loyal tenantry. The interference of some upstarts and the Land League has now utterly demoralised them, and T can henceforth take no interest in my estates, although to part with them would cost me many a panp for the numerous associations by which they are endeared to me. My sole object now is to die in peace and leave some property to my children."
