HOLSTEIN CATTLE IN AMERICA.

Prior to the Intsrnational Live Stock Show in Paris, in 1877, wo had been accustomed to regard the Ayrshire and Alder-icy cattle as without rivals as milkers, and giwit was the surprise of many British farmers on visiting the exhibition to find that several of the Continental breeds—particularly so:>:i» of the Dutch—equalled, if they did not surpasp, either the one or the other. Altho'iir'' until the Dutch cattle were comparati^"! v unknown to the English, we find that t'-eh-value as milkers had been known for y■■ • - to the Americans, a Mr Chenery having imported them into the State of Massachusetts fifteen years ago. Their success in the American daries was so complete that about 1871 a number of gentlemen clubbed together and imported a largo number, so that there are now, with original importatL..... and natural increase, over 1100 cows of the breed in America distributed among m—~ than 300 owners. The cows are 1 v milkers, and in that respect are said to c - : all other breeds. Thoy are variously known in America as " Holstein" and "Du'hFresian," but more generally by the for '■>■ ; name. They were selected in North E 1 land. In outline and general appearanr they much, resemble the Ayrshire (originally of Dutch extraction), except that they are considerably larger and invariably of bhick-and-white colo.ir. It i« claimed for th..vi in America that the steers are more easily fattOiuii than the Ayrshires, and attain great weights, sometimes from 2000 pounds t 3000 pounds.
