DUNEDIN.
August 16. A seven roomed house, at Deborah Bay, belonging to W. Julie, was burned down on Sunday. It was insured in the National for £150. The loss is £200 above tbe insurance. Steamer Mountaineer has been sold by auction for £2400. The students of the Otago University who obtained the New Zealand University degree of 8.A., were presented with their diplomas last evening by Dr Stuart. There was a numerous attendance. J. C. Coates' tender of £2,625 for laying permanent way on the Waipara section has been accepted. The Chamber of Commerce has received the following telegram : —"Deputation re dock entirely successful. Endowment asked for granted. Government will introduce a bill this session constituting Stock Trust with borrowing powers." The St. Kilda baby mystery has been solved by the police. It appears that the father taking an aversion to the child, had it placed with some relatives at Milton, who fearing improper motives being attributed sent it home. The parents then brought it to Danedin, and left it where it was found. The police requested the parents to take the child back.
