HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.
(This Dat.)
The Council met at 11 a.in. Present: Messrs Tanner (chairman), Bennett, Eymev, Williams, Ton , , and Kinross. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — . From the chairman of the Heretaunga Eoad Board, asking that the impounding in that district may be done by the county ranger. From Urnpene Pubara, Eenata Kawepo, and Watene Hapuku, declining to assist the Council in the collection of the dog tax. From Mr Eichard Hollis, applying for a slaughter license for section 22, Meanee.— Granted. From the Inspector of slaughter-houses, reporting that all the private slaughterhouses had been properly conducted ; also pointing out that, in the action brought against Mr Better, for a breach of the Act, defendant was fined 5s and costs, a penalty quite inadequate to suppress such breaches of the law. Mi* Bennett called the attention of the Council to the fact that, in bringing the action against Mr Retter, the Inspector had been put to over £3 of expenses, and_ he moved that this sum he refunded. —Carried. Prom Mr H. Twigg, of Petane, stating that no attempt had been made to collect the dog tax amongst the natives of his district, and that the settlers in the neighbourhood of the pah were constantly suffering much damage from a number of curs roaming over the country. He therefore requested that such steps should be taken as the law may allow for making the collection of the dog tax general. Mr Bennett moved that the Council take the necessary steps to compel the natives to pay the tax. —The motion was seconded and carried. On the motion of Mr Williams the offer was withdrawn that was made by the Council to the chiefs, in the matter of payment of commission on collection. , The Impounding Eanger reported concerning certain cases of alleged rescuing of animals when being driven to the pound. It was resolved that the ranger be supplied with a copy of the Act and that he be guided by its provisions, and when in doubt to apply to the clerk who will obtain legal advice. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Sutton. Mr Bennett as one of the committee appointed to inspect the slaughter-house at Awatoto said, that he had visited the yard and found everything in very good working oiJer. Some repairs were ordered to be effected, and he hoped now that the butchers -would have no further cause of complaint. Mr Eymer said that he wa3 much pleased with the condition of the yards which were remarkably clean when he visited them. The only thing that he found that would bear out the complaint made by Mr Higgins, was that some of the butchei'3 were in the habit of buying pigs, and feeding them in the yards for some days before slaughtering. He suggested that a set of rules should be drawn up and posted up at the yards. Motion made that a set of rules be drawn up to be submitted at the next sitting of the Council. Carried. Messrs Eymer and Bennett consented to lend their assistance in framing the rules. Vouchers were passed, and the accounts to the amount of £600 16s Id ordered to be paid. The Council then adjourned.
