WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Present: Messrs Johnston (chairman), Dillon, Smith, Mackersey, Levy, Herrick, Rathbone, and Gaisford. OVEBSEEBS' BEPOBT. Patangata Hiding. — The contract for metalling Dillon's Cutting is almost completed. Kaikora contract forming and metalling 28 chains, the formation is completed. It would he advisable nob to proceed with the metalling until the spring. As instructed I interviewed Mr Collins re claim for gravel, but cannot come to any arrangement. Waipukurau Riding.—The culverts on main road between rivers have been renewed, also some work on the Gorge Hill. One surface man was employed during the month on the main road, towards the southern boundary of the riding. Waipawa Biding. —Two new culverts on Ruataniwha road, and some surface work. Tamurau Riding.—The contract for metalling on the flats is completed. The works at the Pourerere end of the road are progressing. The weather during this month has been unfavourable for works in this district. Eparaima Riding.— One man employed at surface work between Gorgo and Wanstead. Two men from Wanstead to Porangahau hill. Porangahau Riding.—l have let by contract the cleaning of 120 chains of side drains on the flats at 4s per ohain. Ruataniwha Riding.—The contract on Ashley-Clinton road is progressing. The works are now in a soft state for traffic owing to the continuous wet weather. The formation and metalling on Grant's flat is let at the original estimate. Woodville Riding. —The Victoria road is now cleared to its western extremity, also the Manga atua road to McDonald's. The drain on extension Woodlands road was about completed when I visited the district on the 20th of last month. Gilmore's contract, Heretaunga, is well advanced tenders will be laid before you to-day for the widening of the main road in the township. The main road is getting considerably cut up between Danevirke and Norsewood. A. Mackay, Road Overseer. » Be Waipawa Riding, Cr. Rathbone asked why Ebbett had not gone on with the contract of forming approach from Waipawa to the river. In answer the Road Overseer stated that the contractor had refused to sign the bond. Re Woodville Riding, Cr Gaisford proposed that the Road Overseer be requested to repair all parts where necessary of the Forty-mile Bush road. Seconded by Cr Rathbone, and after considerable discussion carried. FINANCE. The Chairman proposed, and Cr Mackersey, seconded, that vouchers passed by finance committee be paid. Carried. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr. Smith gave notice of motion that " The main road from Waipukurau to the boundary of Eparaima district be taken over by the County Council." Motion to be considered at special ingRUATANIWHA BIDING. Cr Herrick proposed that the following amounts be expended on this riding:— Waipavva-mate road, £50; Ireland's road (tviakaretu), £15; road to school Ashley-Clinton, £15; road by Sherwood to Makaretu bnd other bye-roads, Sherwood to Blackburn school-house, £50; Sherwood to FairSeld, £30. Seconded by Smith and carried. TENDBKS. Before opening the tenders for the County Kate Collector, Cr. Smith asked whether the sureties could not be lowered, as £12 5s was too excessive. In answer the Chairman said, as the applicants had teen informed this was the amount, it would be unnecessary to lower it this year. The following tenders for Rate Collector were opened:-~Rudd, £90; Harwood, £75; Tattershall, £70, Westmoreland, £68 ; Coward, £b"5 ; Sinclair, £63. Cr. Mackersey proposed, and Cr. Levy seconded that Harwoods tender be accepted. As an amendment Cr. Smith proposed that the lowest tender be accepted. Seconded by Cr. Gaisford. Amendment lost. The same Cr. then proposed three other amendments, with the evident intention that Harwood'B tender should not be accepted. He also spoke in very strong terms of the carelessness of Harwoods's collecting, etc., while holding the position of collector. The motion was ultimately carried, four being for it and three against. Road work at Woodville, A. Peebles £22 103, was accepted, he being the lowest tenderer. The Council rose at 3.30.
