BRISBANE.

July 30. Three important libel actions are pending. One has been brought by Mr Hemnaant against the Observer for £5000 damages. The other two informations are laid by Mr Coote, a journalist, and Mr Perkins, Secretary for Lands, against the Evangelical Standard, damages being laid at £1000 and £2000 respectively. A telegram is to hand from Rockhampton stating that a nurse girl, while walking with three children, carelessly dropped one into the river, and then, it is further alleged, drowned the other two in order to prevent their telling. An inquiry is being instituted by the police into the reported crime.
