The Bank of New Zealand opened a branch in temporary premises at Hastings this morning. We learn that the Hon. H. R. Russell left for England by the last 'Frisco boat from Auckland. Our obituary notice contains the name of Mrs Bygum. "This lady was well known in Napier. She was formerly the wife of the late Mr James Wood, the orginal proprietor of the Hawke's Bay Herald. The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland at 7 a.m. The Southern mails were shipped by the Hawea, that left Onehunga at 10.30 o'clock. The Hawke's Bay portion will probably arrive at Napier over'and from Wellington on Thursday evening. A Maori did a smart thing at Masterton the other day. His horse was impounded, and fees and damages amounted to £2 7s 6d. No owner claiming the beast it was put up to auction in due course, when the Maori proprietor boughtthe horse in for 6s 6d, thus saving £2 Is. The following was dropped into the Editor's box, and we publish it in the interests of the public, and as a suggestion to the Corporation:—" Tenders wanted for running a ferry between tbe Napier railway station and Munrce-street. For further particulars apply at any of the Silt Traps." We remind members of the Football Club that a special general meeting will be held at the Criterion Hotel this evening. As the two important matches of the fceason are approaching, and as some important business is to be submitted to the meeting, it is desirable that there should be a full attendance. At a recent meeting of the committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club tbe following sums were voted for improving the race course at Hastings:—£22o for a new saddling paddock, weighing room, scraping sheds, and for enlarging and beautifying the lawn ; and between £50 and £60 for top-dressing the course.

At a meeting of ratepayers of the Petane Road Board district, held at Mr Viller's Hotel, Petane, on Saturday, tbe 23rd July, the following were elected wardens for the ensuing year:—Messrs McKenzie, Twigg, Steven, C. Villers, and Major Richardson, the last named being elected chairman to the board for the year. The meeting then terminated.

There was much dissatisfaction expressed at the Albion bringinar down no mail as usual from Auckland, only a few letters and eight newspapers reaching here, a sort of supplementary mail. There are two conjectures for the omission,—one is that the Albion took our mail on, and the other is tbat it was by mistake put on board the Arawata that left for Sydney much about the same time that the Albion steamed for tbe South.

At the Hawke's Bay County Council meeting this morning there was Borne conversation concerning the grazing of stock on the unused roads in the Pukahu district. Mr Tanner said he did not find fault with sheep being turned on these roads, as they did no damage, but cattle tramped the drains down. Mr Kinross thought some revenue might be made by closing the roads for a certain period in each year for the collection of grass seed. Mr Tanner was of opinion that the small settlers would take very good care that the grass should not seed. No resolution was passed on the subject.

At the Eesident Magistrate's Court this morning, before Captain Preece, R.M., Charlotte Butwell was charged with drunkenness, but failing to put in an appearance her bail was forfeited. Alfred Long and Frank Yore were charged with the same offence, and each fined os and cofts, or 48 hours imprisonment. George Richards was charged, on the information of Constable Foster, with obstructing the police in the execution of their duty, and fined 20s and costs, or 14 days imprisonment with hard labor. Alexander Chaplin was charged with being drunk, with exposing his person, and with resisting the police. The police withdrew the last charge, and the prisoner was fined 5s or 48 hours on the first charge, and 10s and costs or 7 days on the second. The Court then adjourned.
