THE LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —If anything were wanted to show the depth of degradation to which the Liberal Association bas fallen under the management of the half-dozen obscure individuals who claim to be the representatives of all that is honorable, all that is liberal, all that is noble in tbe human family, it would be the short and offensive effusion that appeared in last night's issue bearing the signature of "S. Carnell." I trust the person who appended tbat signature is not our respected fellowtownsman Mr Samuel Carnell, for whom I bear very much respect. Sir, lam not a " pronounced liberal," although I may have contributed to its funds to the extent of " one shilling," which it appears is all that is necessary to become political angel, clothed in the purest raiment (from J. Leonard's store). Nor, Sir, would I cara to belong to an association that apparently receives shillings from Unsuspecting individuals, and regards it as an insult when called upon to account for the money. Mr Carnell says that he is the "ex-treasurer" of that remarkably liberal body. I would ask who is the present treasurer ? Does any one know outside the sanctum sanctorum of the Caledonian Hotel ? And if there is a Treasurer, who elected him ? It being deemed an impertinence for a true liberal—your correspondent says he is, and I believe him—to ask a plain question of tbe committee, I also may object to the vulgar sneer Mr Carnell indulges in about paid touts of tbe Conservatives. I may reply that the Conservatives never have attempted " to stuff tbe rolls," and that the party only holds together in order to save the colony from the effects of the secret cabals and bidden machinations of tbe " Liberals" who work in the dark because, may be, their deeds will not bear tbe light of day.—l am, &c, A Conservative.
