RAILWAY MANAGEMENT AND CHEAP TIMBER.
[To the Editor of tbe Daily Telegraph.] Sir,— Apart from the question whether Mr Peddie is justified in spending money in Palmerston which he makes in Napier merely to effect a comparatively paltry saving of perhaps £100, there can be no doubt tbat the fact of Palmerston saw mills being able to undersell the Hawke's Bay mills is one of vast importance. I cannot think that the railway charges have very much to do with the circumstance, and it will be well for the local mills to consider seriously whether they can by a reduction in their prices, overcome the difficulty which now seriously menaces their very continuance. Pressure ought to be brought to bear on the Government to compel a reduction to at least the former tariff, but the mills must also reduce their prices. Any concession likely to be made in the railway charges will not alone be sufficient to keep the Palmerston timber out of the market. The difference in the prices of the local and tbe Mauawatu timber is now very considerable.—l am, &c, X. July 18, 1881.
