In the libel case Rees v. Wickhara, of tbe Free Lance, Mr Justice Gillies summed up strongly in favor of Wickharn, and the verdict was not guilty. Wickham was therefore discharged. The criminal prosecution for libel instituted by W. J. Hurst against J. D. Wickbam has ended by the latter pleading guilty, and tendering an abject written apology, in which he acknowledges the defamatory statements made by him against Hurst to be false and without the slightest foundation, and binds himself to pay £20 towards the prosecutor's expenses, while regretting that he is not in a position to pay more, and undertakes to refrain from publishing criticisms on Hurst for the future. Tbe apology waa accepted. The Judge, in passing sentence, told defendant that had the case gone to a jury the consequences would have been serious for him, as his conduct in publishing libels on Hurst was utterly indefensible. A fine of Is and costs was imposed.
