WELLINGTON.
July 14.
A meeting; was held al the Pier Hotel last night for handing over the stakes in connection with the late champion soulling race between Hearn and White. The trophies won by the Civil Service crew and the handicap sculling races were also presented. Mr Hill was in the chair, and handed over the siakes to Hearn, less £25 given to White to defray his expenses. The champion's health was then drunk in bumpers, and in responding Hearn said every praise was due to Mr Batkin the secretary of the Star Boating Club, for except through that gentleman's indefatiuable exertions.; there would not have been any championship rowed for. White followed, and referred to holding an interprovincial regatta at Wellington, but thought the matter should be deferred at present. White was asked his opinion regarding the suitability of Wellington harbor for rowing, and stated that he had been led to believe that he might as well pull iv Cook's Straits as in Tort Nicholson harbor, but from what he had seen of it it was five times more adapted for pulling than Auckland harbor.
