THE TARTANS.

There are nine regiments in tbe ai'my which have the title of Highlanders. Of these, five are kilted and tbe otber four wear the trews. Tbe kilted regiments are, the 42nd Royal Hi»hland Regiment (the Black Watch), t.l*e 78th Highlanders (Rof*sshire Buffs), the 74-th Cameron Highlanders, the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders. Tbe regiments wenring the trews are, the 7lst Highland Light Infantry, the 72nd (Duke of Albany's) Highlanders, the 74th rlighlanders, and the 91st. (Princess Louise's) Argyllshire Highlanders. Of these regimpnts, the 79th wear the Cameron tartan, the 92nd the Gordon, the 93rd the Motherland, and the 91st the Cawdor Campbell — the uniforn thus in each case connecting the regiment -with the country and family in which it was raised. The 71st wear the Maeleod tartan, having been raised by Lord Maeleod, son of the Earl of Cromarty ; and the 78th, which was formed by the Earl of Seaforth out of tbe clans of Mackenzie and Macrae, wear the Mackenzie tartan. The 42nd wear a tartan which is not like that of any elan, although it closely resembles the Forbes tartan ; the reason for this is not far to seek, as tho regiment was originally formed of genvlemen of -various clans and families.
