WAIPAWA.
(_ BOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
July 11th, 1881
The bazaar under the auspices of the congregation of the Methodist Church came off to-day, tbe programme being bazaar from 2 to 6, gift auction 7 till about—well, till further orders, and of course was a great success, if not in any Other way, financially. Considering the short time the committee had to prepare the hall, a very good show was made, the hall being provided for and attended to by the following ladies: —Mesdames Nicholls, Blank, MacDougall, Meredith, and tbe Misses Sebley and Harwood. The attendance during the afternoon was scarcely as large as might have been expected, but I am happy to say during tbe evening there was a crowded house, and, as is generally the case on these occasions, very spirited bidding, and as there was a most liberal display of gifts would-be purchasers were able to procure (at very often considerably above their " shop" value) from a packet of pins to a 400-gallon tank, or any article ranging from a wheelbarrow to half-a-dozen pounds of sausages, a pair of socks to a 1000 of bricks, etc., etc.; in fact there was as varied a display as has been presented to the Waipawa bazaar-goers for a considerable time. Mr W. L. Coward wielded the hammer, and as usual proved himself a worthy disciple of Obidiab (oh bid higher.) Messrs Johnson and Nicholls also ably assisted at the auction. At intervals during the evening Mr A. Fraser kindly officiated at the piano. The accounts not being made up, I will give you the financial result in my next. On dit. There is likely to be more work for the gentlemen of tbe long robe through the present excavation in Waverley-street. Everything at present is sub rosa, but more anon.
