July 9. Mr Sealey, of Tim.iru, lectured to a good audience last night on the desirability of substituting a progressive land tax for the property tax. Mr May occupied the chair, and his views met with great acceptance. A unanimous vote of thanks was parsed. A large number of his pamphlets, " Are We to Stay Here," have been sold to-day. A valuable mare has been poisoned at Winton by eating phosphorised oats. The Southland County Council has voted £250 to the hospital, £25 to the benevolent institution, and balf the total expenditure of tbe Tararua committee.
