That hideously dangerous culvert end at Newton's corner, at the junction of Tennyson and Hastings streets, was the scene of an accident this afternoon. As a cab waß being driven round from Tennyson-street, and making rather a close shave oj: the corner, the horse struck his leg against the culvert and fell, fortunately without doing much mischief. We do not suppose there is to be found in any borough in the world a street corner to come up to this one for rale-of-thutnb construction.
Now that the days have passed when the majority of contributors to the Customs / revenue at this port had their places of business at the Spit, it is high time that the Custom House should be removed to town. We reoollect the time and trouble ifc occasioned to induce tbe Government of the day to remove the chief post office from the Spit to town, and in anticipation of an , equal amout of opposition to publio convenience in the matter of the Custom House, it is none too Roon to agitate for the desirable change that we have suggested.
It may not be generally known that an important rowing match for a laree Btake is shortly to take place at the Spit. The competitors are well known in aquatic circles, both possessing: great skill, and more than ordinary endurance and strength. The course is from the Iron Pot round a buoy off Long Point and back. The men "*f are undergoing a thorough prepaiation; one may be sepn just now wrapped in numerous mufflers inspecting the shipping in search of information as to the situation of the forecastle and figurehead; the other is training in private. It is not improbable that the victor will send a challenge to the winner of the championship shortly to take place in Wellington. Let us hope he will bring back the trophy, in case a match should be arranged.
The Napier Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association held their halfyearly social gathering in St Paul's sohoolroom lsst evening. The chair was taken by the President, Revd. D. Sidey, who opened the meeting with a short address, mainly directed to the members of the association. The programme, consisting of readings, recitations, songs, and dialogues, was then prone through, and seemed to be appreciated by the audienoe. The VicePresidents, Messrs McKay and Edwards, gave short addresses. Mr McKay intimated that the new half-session began next Thursday, when he hoped to see a full attendanoe. Mr Edwards stated that tbe members of the association would be glad to welcome at their ordinary meeting the faces of several of tbe young men he saw around him. He thought they would both benefit themselves and the association by becoming members. The President, after the programme had been completed, suggebted that at their next gathering the members should take up a debate of some public interest. He thought this would help to show what progress the members were making. The evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem.
