June 14. IntheHoueeof Commons some progress is now being made in committee with the Irish Land Bill, and one hundred amendments of which notice had been given have been withdrawn. Mr Gladstone has announced his intention to pass the measure at all hazards. Official notice has been issued by the Agent-General for Victoria notifying that the importation of stock from England into Victoria has been disallowed. June 15. A majority of the House of Commons has affirmed Sir Wilfrid Lawson's motion that Parliament is bound to legislate on the principle of local option in regard to the liquor law.. Hartmann, who i? charged with attemptipg to take the life of the late Emperor of Russia, has been arrested in Germany and sent to Russia. Captain Erskine, private secretary in the First Lord of tLe Admiralty, ha« been appointed to succeed Commodore Wilson as Commodore in command of the Australian naval station. A Nihilist plot of an extensive character has been discovered in St. Petersburg, which involved a general rising and the destruction of the bridge around the city.
The British Government has communicated with the United States Government concerning the presence and movements of prominent Fenians in New York. The Prince of Wales will attend the banquet to be given by the Lord Mayor in the Mansion House on the 16th July. Some disorder has occurred in Marseilles in consequence of the strong feeling shown by the Italian residents with regard to the French occupation and protectorate of Tunis. June 19. During torpedo practice near Goletta, in the Mediterranean, some gun-cotton which was stowed in the pinnace of H.M.S Monarch exploded, and the casualties were one killed and seven injured. The Belgian iron masters have sent an agent to Australia for the purpose of developing the trade between Belgium and those colonies. Hanlan is arranging for a regatta at Toronto, Canada, in which it is expected some of the principal oarsmen will compete. Edward Trickett, the New South Wales sculler, is at Saratoga, America, Whilst rowing there he caught a " crab," and his boat capsized. Trickett sank twice, and was only rescued with difficulty. It has been decided that the vessels of the new French mail service from Marseilles to Australia and New Caledonia are to proceed via Rouen. The relations between Turkey and Austria are strained.
The conviction of Joahann Most, the late editor of the Freibeit, has been confirmed on appeal. The cLarge prepared against Most was incitement to murder in connection with an article published in his paper on the assassination of the late Emperor of Russia.
Fresh discoveries of gold have been made in Hungary, in the government of Transylvania.
The Marquis of Huntly, who recently succeeded the Earl of Fife as Oaptain of the Corps of Gentlemen at Arms in the Queen's Household, has resigned.
Some bags containing dynamite have been found in a canal at St. Petersburg. They were probably concealed by Nihilists.
The conflict which occurred in Marseilles between the French troops and the Italian residents was continued on Sunday, and three combatants were killed and many wounded.
