LONDON.
June 23. In the House of Commons to-day the Right Hon. M. E. Grant Duff, Undersecretary of State for the Colonies, in reply to a question, promised that the Government would take into consider*-
tion the question of taking steps to bring about an agreement betweeti the Powers in order to counteract kidnapping and slavery in the Pacific. A communication having been made to the British Government by the Boers who remained loyal during the recent war, asking for some compensation in consequence of the withdrawal of the British rule from the Transvaal, the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone has addressed a letter in reply, in which he states that the Government do not consider the petitioners entitled to any indemnification under the circumstances.
At the wool auction to-day 9500 bales were catalogued. A firm and active demand was again experienced. The withdrawals of wool to date amount to 15,000 bales.
