May 30. At the wool auction to-day 7,800 bales were offered. The tone of the sale was firm. The Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, has addressed a communication to the Times to the effect that there is no foundation whatever for the statements recently published that the convention in settlement of the frontier difficulty with Turkey has been signed by the Greek Government. Lord Hartington states that he has not up to the present time agreed to the tei*ms of the convention. Arrests of suspected persons and prominent agitators continue to be made daily in Ireland. Among those now in custody is Mr Kettle, one of the principal members of the Land League. A settlement of the difficulty between the British and American Governments in connection with the Fortune Bay fishery dispute has been arrived at, and in accordance with the terras of agreements come to England will pay £15,000 as compensation.
