AUCKLAND.
May 25. The passengers by the Rotomahana from Sydney report that they saw in a south-west direction, about ten degrees above the horizon, a little before eight o'clock on Monday night, a star, which they took to be a comet. The tail was faintly luminous, and the head downwards to the horizon. Mr George Coats, one of the oldest commercial traveller in the New Zealand trade, was entertained by his fellow travellers at a dinner at the Star Hotel on Monday night, prior to his departure for England. He was presented with an address bearing forty-two signatures of the representatives of Australian and New Zealand firms. Several Mormons left by the outgoing mail steamer. The Auckland Stud Oompany sold to the Hon. Mr White, of New South Wale?, who is en route for England, a Silvios colt by Musket for twelve hundred and fifty guineas, the largest price ever obtained for a foal. Silvos' first foal since the Stud Company bought her fetched eight hundred guineas. The United States consol has received a letter from Washington acknowledging the receipt of the petition of the Chamber of Commerce at Dunedin r<? tbe wool duties, and stating that the petition would be laid before the Congressional Committee.
Rogers, a City Council employee, was standing on the platform of a crowded train coming form the Papakura races yesterday, when a scuffle ensued between two Maoris, and one (Ngahoe Thomson) threw Rogers from the trian, which was going at the rate of fifteen miles an hour, yet when the train stopped, and Rogers was picked up, it was found that he had only sustained a sprained wrist and was slightly bruised. Thomson was charged with the offence at the Police Court today and remanded.
