May 21. It has transpired fiat the Eight Hon. Earl Granville, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, has referred to the Tunisian treaty in recent despatches to the French Government emphatically protesting that France will be expected to fulfil the existing treaty obligations, and to respect the priveleges that England has hitherto enjoyed in connection with the Government of the Tunisian Principality. At the wool auction to-day 3,200 bales were offered. The bidding was excited. May 23. The condition of Ireland continues to cause grave anxiety to the Government, and six flying columns of troops have been organised to assist in enforcing the service of writs in the disaffected districts. Thomas Brennan, secretary of the Land League, and a mercantile clerk in Dublin, has been arrested upon a warrant issued by the Viceroy under the provisions of the Coercion Act.
Her Majesty the Queen has conferred the honor of Knighthood upon the Hon. C. Lilley, Chief Justice of Queensland ; the Hon. James Prendergast, Chief Justice of New Zealand ; and John Garrie, Chief Justice of Fiji. The Grand Cross of St. Micbael and St. George has been conferred upon Sir Arthur Kennedy, the Governor of Queensland. Sir T. D. Bell, Agent- General for New Zealand, and the Hon. A. H. Palmer, Colonial Secretary of Queensland, are created Commanders, and the Hon. Mr Fraser, Surveyor-General of South Australia, a Companion of the same Order. Prince Leopold has been created Duke of Albany. The various amendments already put down against the clautss of the Irish Land Laws Bill for consideration in committee in the House of Commons occupy forty-two pages of the notice paper. Among the names of the gentlemen recently created Companions of the Order of St. Michael and St George is that of Mr St. A. Duncan, Collector of Customs at Sydney.
