May 23. The Premier arrived from Wellington on Saturday. Mr J. T. Fisher, M.H.R., addresses, his constituents in the Heathcote district on Thursday. Two four-roomed cottages at Avonside were burnt down yesterday. The insurances were £150 in the Transatlantic office and £150 in the National office. The origin of the fire is unknown. ft is explained that the Lyttelton Court ol enquiry originated from a requisition to Colonel Packe signed by 48 members of the Brigade praying that the appoiatraent of Mr Pyeuont to the sub-lieutenancy be cancelled. The EugliHh mail from Cbristcburcb on Saturday was unusually heavy. It comprised 8969 letters and 42 bags of books and newspapers, estimated to contain over 2000.
