The cathedral spire, which rises to a height of 202 feet, was completed yesterday.

A court-martial is now being held at Lyttelton respecting the charges brought by Sub-Lieut. Pyemont against Lieut. McLellan, both of the Naval Brigade.

At the annual meeting of the Sydenham Building Society last night it transpired that the defalcations of W. W. Charters, the late manager, who had absconded to England, amounted to £2500, of which £1200 will be recovered. Investors shares are now only valued at 8s 9d in the pound. A proposal to wind up the society was adjourned till a future meeting. The funeral of the late Captain Garrard, of the Tararua, took place to-day. It was of a private character, only the relatives and a few others attending.
