WAIPAWA.
(fhom otra own correspondent.) May, 20, 1881.
The present letter must of necessity be a brief one, as news of any kind down here is at a premium. This evening the local Road Board met, and passed the works of the contractor's for the executed improvements to Rose-street. Tenders were also considered for the opening up of Waverleystreet, but one and all being too high it was resolved to invite fresh tenders, to be laid before next meeting on Wednesday.
Encouraged by the success of the last concert given at Waipawa in aid of the Public Library, the committee of the latter institution have resolved to hold another entertainment in about three weeks time. Concerts are also under way ror Kaikora and Waipukurau, so we cannot grumble much in respect of amusements at present.
The only remaining topic now is the weather, and I shall dismiss that subject by saying that dry weather has again set in, with cold nights and frosty mornings. Next week I hope to be able to send you more news, meantime I am busily engaged gathering statistics so as to be better able to check the statement of the Herald's "own" at Waipawa touching " salted legs of mutton."
