CR. SWAN AND MUNICIPAL SALARIES.

[To thb Editor of the Daily Teleokaph.] Sib, —The coolness of Councillor iSvvan is delightful- When .speaking to the motion of Cr. McDougall on the matter of the salaries of the officers of the Corporation, he is reported to have said that the course being pursued was right, as the engineer's, inspector's, and overBeer's time were mostly devoted to the •works under the loan account. This but badly fits in with bis remark a<; the previous meeting of the Council when he stated that the engineer's time could have been better spent than in preparing a plan for a scheme to raise water to the hill?- He also volunteered the information that there would be plenty of money left to supply water to the hill residents.

This assurance by Cr. Swan is really very comfortiag, and is probably of as much value as his statements usually are. The importance he attaches to himse'f when he states that he did not promise the hills would get a supply of water is admirable in the extreme. If Cr. S'.van'g statement be worth notice at all, that the course pursued in the matter of salaries was right, we, tbe burgesses, may presume that so soon as the amount of the loan is expended but few officers will be required by the Corporation, as the whole will not find sufficient to occupy their time, and the amount for each too small after the sums for salaries now put down against the loan are deducted from their present salaries.—l am, &c, Phiz.
