EDUCATION BOARD.
THIS DAY.
The Board met at 10.30 a.m. Present: Messrs Ormond (in the chair), Harding, Locke, Dobson, Tanner, Sidey, Sutton, and Russell. CORRESPONDENCE. From the chairman of the Gisborne committee asking for the appointment of a pupil teacker, and submitting the name of James Hanghey. Resolved that the appointment be sustained subject to his passing the examination. From the same, nominating five scholars whose travelling expenses should be paid in attending the scholarship examination in Napier. Approved.
From the same, asking for the erection of four chimneys with a view to warming the school-room. Resolved that one chimney be erected at a cost not to exceed £20.
From tbe secretary of the Hastings committee, and from the head master, asking for grant to make certain alterations in the school buildings. The secretary was instructed to reply "that there were no funds available for the purpose. From the chairman of the Onga Onga Committee, asking that an oven be put in the master's house. Agreed that it should be provided out of the school funds.
From the secretary of the Napier committee, stating that the committee recommend the Board to retain tbe services of Miss Bedingfield pending the next aunual examination of teachers. Approved. From the same, forwarding the names of six boys and three girls as candidates for the scholarship examination in Class C., and of four boys candidates for Class B.
From Mr John Burton, senr., in reference to the payments made on account of the scholarship obtained by his son, Tbe secretary was instructed to inform him that he had already been informed of the Board's decision in the matter.
From the chairman of the Puketapu committee in reference to repairs to the schoolhouse. Tbe Board approved of the expenditure, the alterations to be carried out under the superintendence of the architect.
From the secretary of the Taradale and Meanee committee, recommending that Mr A. Mabbett continue as teacher of the Meanee school pending the result of the examination of his school; also recommending the appointment of MiBS Alice Smith as pupil teacher to the Taradale school subject to her passing the required examination. Resolved to communicate to the committee that the Board had been informed that a duly qualified pupil teacher had applied, and that the Board wished to know the reason the committee did not recommend the one best qualified.
The Chairman said he had received a telegram from the inspector in reference to the condition of the school at Te Arai, under the charge of Mr Lysnar, and askj ing that he be empowered to give the '** master three months notice. He had at once replied authorising the inspector to give the notice referred to. The inspector said he had visited the school and found it a school only in name. Everything showed a want of attention, and at present the attendance was almost nil. He had seen the committee, and informed them of the condition of tbe school ; they said they were aware of it, but thought the matter rested with the Board. The Board approved tbe action taken by the chairman and inspector, and it was resolved that the committee be notified that, in advertising for a successor to Mr Lysnar, the' Board will pay a salary on the average attendance at the school, in addition to the subsidy received on account of native children.
It was also resolved that a letter be forwarded to the Wbaerenga-a-hika and Frazertown committees containing the report of the inspector in reference to their schools, and requesting the committees to take matters into their consideration, and make recommendations to the Board with a view to the alteration and improvement of the existing state of things.
From the chairman of the Wairoa committee, asking that, in consequence of the increased attendance of children, a teacher should be appointed to assist the present mistress, and stating that a new class room was greatly needed. It was resolved that the attendance was Bufficient for a mistress and two pupil teachers, or a mistress and assistant, and that the Board would approve of an assistant if the services of the pupil teacher were dispensed with. From L. Gosnell in reference to scholarship's. Approved. From the chairman of the Woodville Dchool committee, referring to a request from the assistant mistress of the school for assistance to enable her to pass her examination, and recommending it to the favourable consideration of the Board. Resolved that the Board is unable to do anything, but that the mistress might make arrangements with the master to receive lessons.
From the same, stating that a meeting had been called to consider the question of enforcing the compulsory clause of the Act.
From the Education Department in reference to moving the Crown Lands Department to get the two acres marked on tbe map of the Tarawera township formally set apart and gazetted as a public school site on certain conditions. Also that application be made to the Armed Constabulary Department for the use of a building at the redoubt as a school house, &c. Resolved that the Board agree to the proposals except as to the cultivation of the two acres as requested by the Maoris, but the Board is ■willing to maintain a public school whilst the attendance warrants the expenditure. SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS. It was moved by Mr Harding, and seconded by Mr Tanner, "That Messrs Ormond and Sutton be re-elected School Commissioners under the Education Reserves Act, for the three years ending June, 1884. Agreed to. ACCOUNTS. The accounts for the month were passed and ordered to be paid. The Board then adjourned.
