NEW PLYMOUTH.

May 17.

A few persons were summoned yesterday in the R.M. Court for amounts due for property tax. Judgment was given in every case. Only one case was defended —that of Mr Liewthwaite. He sent in a return for all lands claimed by him, representing a total of £6230. That amount included sections Nos. 46 and 52, block 7, Waimate Plains. He said that those sec-

tions had beeu illegally taken possession of by tbe Government and sold without his consent. He therefore objected to pay tbe property tax, because the land was not in his possession, and also because the persons at present in occupation had paid the tax. He said he put those sections in his return because he intended to claim them from the Government. The Magistrate gave judgment for the amount claimed, which Liewthwaite said he would settle by giving a cheque on the Government for it.
