May IG. A portion of the census returns were published to-day. The following are the totals for the principal districts, showing the increase since 1878 :—City of Christchurch 30,979, increase 6000 ; Lyttelton 4127, increase 651 ; Sydenham 8459, increase 1949; Heathcoth 11,631, increase 2333 ; Selwyn 6196, increase 525; Akaroa 613, decrease 29 ; Borough of Sydenham, though shown separately, is also included in the returns for the electoral district City of Christchurch.
The agricultural returns for the electoral districts of Kaiapoi, Ashley, and Cheviot, show that 24,970 acres are sown in wheat the estimated yield of which is 520,286 bushels ; 16,049 acres are in oats, which yield 381,134 bushels ; 3675 acres are in barley, the yield .being 89,595 bushels, and 1492 acres are in potatoes with a yield of 7409 tons.
