ROME.

May 13. The news of the surrender of the Bey, and the terms of the treaty which have been agreed to by him, has caused great excitement throughout Italy, and indignation is freely expressed at the action of France. It is expected that diplomatic representations will at once be made to the French Government with regard to the position of the Bey and the autonomy of the Tunisian people as affected by the treaty.

May 14. There is a division of opinion in the Ministry as to the action which should be taken by Italy in view of the French position in Tunis. Several meetings of the Cabinet have been held, but no understanding could be arrived at, and the Liberal members of the Ministry have in consequence tendered their resignation to the King.
