There are thirty-five lioensed public vehicles in the borough, and as many drivers. We would remind publicans that Monday is the last day for leaving applications for new licenses and renewels with the olerk to the Lincensing Bench. We hear that Mr J. K. Newton, Receiver of Municipal Rates, is about to resign his appointment. Mr Newton's resignation will be a loss to the Corporation. We would remind intending competitors that the Artillery challenge cup will be shot for on Monday afternoon, at the Tutaekuri range, at two o'clock sharp. There was no quorum at the meeting of the Public Works Committee called for last night, and the consideration of the water supply scheme is adjourned until Monday evening next. It is rumored that the Minister for Education intends holding an enquiry into the causes that have led the Eduoation Board to refuse permission to scholarship holders pursuing their studies at the Napier Grammar School. Great complaints are made by sportsmen at the inutility of taking out shooting licenses. Everybody who pleases shoots, and nobody is asked whether he has a license. No license is required to shoot native game, and people who go out shooting wild duck are not likely to lower their guns if a pheasant rises within range. Although the Acclimatisation Scoiety offers substantial rewards for the destruction of hawks no notice is taken of those egg-sucking birds, the native wood hen. The scarcity of pheasants is now being attributed to this bird. The wood hen is capital eating; and if a good dinner from its stew, and a shilling for the feet from the society were to be had, this enemy of the pheasant would speedily disappear. If we recollect rightly, the Municipal Council, some time back, passed a recommendation to the effect that the engineer should cause the storm water drain to be flushed at regular intervals, in order to mitigate the nuisance caused by the fearful stench arising from the open gratings. During the last day or two the smell from the drain at the Post Office has been overpowering. Why is not something done ? We have received from the Government Printing Office a copy of the " New Zealand Crown Lands Guide, No. III." Like its predecessors it contains a short summary of the principal features of the Lands Acts, and full lists with short description of all Crown lands open for selection. Bound up with the volume are excellent maps of the two Islands, colored so as to show the lands passed from the Crown, lands not open for free selection, native lands, lands open for sale, and in what way, &c. Herr Bandmann's dramatic season concludes this evening. We think that on the whole the company have every reasen to be well pleased with the result of their visit. The houses have been fairly large every night, the audiences have been appreciative, and the performances have not been surpassed on this stage for dramatic power and effect. We congatulate Mr Gray, the energetic agent, upon the success that has attended that which he has done towards securing the agreeable remimscenses that will remain, we trust, with the playgoers of this town and with Herr Bandmann from the short stay of the company in Napier. Williamson's Juvenile Pinafore Company troupe will arrive here by the Arawata on Monday. This talented juvenile troupe numbers over thirty first-class performers, and wherever they have appeared, especially at Melbourne, Dunedin, and Christchurch, they have drawn crowded and enthusiastic audiences. The orchestra, numbering over twelve, is excellent, and the actors and actresses give such a representation that we in Napier bave never yet had of Gilbert and Sullivan's celebrated comic opera. A programme will be published in y our Monday evening's issue. This company comes under the able management of Mr Walter Reynolds.
