W Knowles, Hastings-street, and unquestionably the many ingenious points displayed in the construction render it well worth examining. As a matter of fact the horizontal feed is common to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification of importance. But in the White machine there is this marked improvement on many other varieties—that the feed plate acts on either side of the needle In other words, the work is pushed along as if by two fingers instead of one. Ohviously this tends to produce very even results, and it enable* the operator to sew along the right or left edge of the fabric at pleasure. At the same time, the iirm of the machine is at, a more thiinordi nary height above the table, und tlio pressure-foot also has a lihernl amount of play given to it by the aid of a weli-cuntrived spline - . A large mass of material could therefore bo p-issoc , . over the work table, and through the machine, without the remotest chance of njuiy. The entire mechanism is <>f the most simple character, and so little friction is there that one may run the m ichino—almost without oe.ing , oor.ticiouß of the fact. When the main part of the machine is not required to be run as, for instance, when shuttle bobbins are to be wound —a little spring catch is thrown back, und the sewing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the driving gear. Further, when any given bearing may in the course of time become worn, the mere turning of a screw effects a refitting of the friction surfaces. One specially ingenious contrivance is displayed in the tension arrangement of the shuttle. 'i here are no holes to be threaded, as ia commonly the case ; but the thread being wound in and out of a few groovee, a little steel plate pops down, and by the action of a spring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps just the desired strain on the under thread.
