THE TRIPLE ACTION BALANCE i WHEEL. , This patented improvement adds a new feature of excellence to these popu'ar Macliines. Some of the advantages are aa follow *.- 1. It enables tho inexperienced to suspend the motion of the Machiuc while learning the treadle action. 2. If the learner starts the treadle motion in the j wrong direction, it will not work the Machine, but aa soon ia it takes the right direction it puts the Machine in motion 3. When winding shuttle-bobbins the action of the Machine is suspended, preventing disarrangements of the threads and unnecessary wear. This Mechanical prinoiple on which Singer's Machines are built can hardly be improved, and asa proof of this ifc need only be said that it is about the only Machine imitators have endeavored to copy, not only in America, but also in Great Britain and the Continent of Europe. The: legal -Droceedings against Kimball and Morton, Newton Wilson and Co., and Frister and Rossman, are Well-kncwn. The case of Newton and Wilson was carried before the Houce of Lords. The Singer Co. won. The action against Frister and Rossman (a German firm), occupied the Superior Courts seventeen days last year. The decision was altogether in favor of the Singer Company. iSincs tbat trial no Sewing Machine Manufacturers or Dealers are permitted to use the name " Singer '" in connection with the style, ma:.e, or sale of any Machine except those of the Singer Manufacturing Company's OWN MAKE. KNOWLES' IS THE APPOINTED AGENT FOR THR NEW WHITE, HORIZONTAL, FEED, NOISELESS, EASY RUNNING, .(And without fear v of contradiction) THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN OEWING Tl/TACHINES This, the latest claimant for the the position o " Cheapest and Best in 'the world " is to be seeu'at the Warehouse of Mr E. W. Knowles, Hastings-street, and unquestionably the many ingenious points dis- i played in the construction render it well worth -examining. As a matter.of fact the horizontal feed is common to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification ot importance. Butinthe. { White machine there is this marked improvement on many other varieties—that the feed plate acts on either side of the needle. In other words, the work ispushedalongasif by two fingers instead of one. Obviously this tends to produce very even results, and ifc enables the operator to sow along the right ] .or loft edge of the fabric at pleasure. At th© Bamo ' time, the arm'of the machine is at a more than ordinary height above the table,, and the pressure-foot also has a liberal amount of play given to it by the aid of a well-contrived sprinc. A large mass of material could therefore bo passed over the work' table, and through the machine, without the remotest chance of njury. The entire mechanism is of the most simple character, and so little friction is - there that one may run the machine—almost without being conscious of tho fact. When the main x part of the machine is not required to be run—as, for instance, when shuttle bobbins are to be wound —a little spring catch is thrown back, and the sewing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the driving gear. Further, when any given bearing may in tne course of time become worn, the mere j turning of a screw effects a refitting of the friction suiiaces. One specially ingenious contrivance is . displayed in the tension arrangement of the shuttle. There are no holes to be threaded, as ia commonly * the case; but tl c thread being wound in and out of ' a few g: oo,*es, a little steel plate pops down, and by the action of aßpring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps just the desired strain on the - - under thread. 'The tension for the upper thread is also automatic, :; 7,..i_i4—; . c . The machines are now on view, and an inspection is respectfully solicited, when Price lists, etc., and fuller parti culara can be obtained at E.
