H.B. AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the committee of the above society was held at the Criterion Hotel this morning. Present: Messrs. Shrimpton (in the chair), H. Campbell, W. Douglas, M. R. Miller, Archibald McLean, J. Heslop, J. Anderson, R.Wellwood, Winter, Bennett, and Allan McLean.
The secretary announced that the
H.B. Jockey Club had declined to pay any portion of the cost of having a telegraphic wire to the grand stand. They were of opinion that the cost was too heavy. Mr Wellwood moved, " That the Jockey Club, having declined to bear any portion of the expense of a telegraphic wire to the grand stand, the matter be allowed to drop." Seconded by Mr Anderson and carried.
The secretary stated that the Jockey Club had given the ground oaretaker a month's notice that they would cease to employ him. Mr Miller proposed, "That Messrs. Wellwood, J. N. Williams, and Archibald McLean, be a sub-committee, with full power to arrange matters re the caretaker." Seconded by Mr McLean, and carried.
After a considerable amount of con-
versation in reference to the champion cups, Mr Miller moved, " Tbat before ; any alteration be made in the disposal of the annual champion cups a general meeting of the subscribers to the fund for providing these caps be called, and their .wishes ascertained." Seconded by Mr Allan McLean. ; 'Moved by Mr Bennett as an amendment," That the resoluion moved by Mr Anderson, and seconded by Mr McLean, at the last committee meeting re cham- ■ pion cups be adhered to." T , Seconded by Mr Winter. The amendment was carried. < ; It was agreed to leave the consideration of the offer of Mr Douglas McLean to present a cup for competition by the Maoris until next committee meeting. Mr M. R. Miller directed the attention of the committee to the fact that some time ago he was appointed on a subcommittee to control the printing and advertising of the society, but had never been consulted in the matter. A week ago he saw a long advertisement in the Herald in reference to the ploughing match, about which he knew nothing. He thought that a considerable saving might be made to the society if the ' advertising, &c, was tendered for. The secretary said that the ploughing
match committee had instructed him to
advertise the match, and he bad done so ' inadvertently without consulting the subcommittee. He had always consulted Mr Winter previously. The matter was then allowed to drop, and the proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
