A DARING BURGLAR CAPTURED.

(by 'telegraph.")

Wellington, May 4. Mr Buchanan, the Inspector of tbe National Bank here, has received the fallowing telegram from Tauranga : — " Bank attacked last night by burglars. One caught after a severe struggle by Sergeant White and Constable Whelan, but the other escaped. No damage was done."

Tatteanga, May 4. The further are the particulars of the attempted burglary : — Sergt. White states that Mr Morris, the manager of the bank, informed him about a week ago that he suspected that someone would try and injure him, and most likely rob the bank, as suspicious parties were prowling about and dogging him from the Club to the bank at night. Upon this information Sergt. White kept a vigilant watch on the bank, and everything went on as usual. Last night, as he was stationed inside the bank, a rap came to the door. The manager of the bank opened the door, when a large quantity of pepper was thrown in his face, completely hlinding him. At the same time the robber clutched the manager by the throat. Constable Whelan, who was stationed behind the door, and who, along with manager, was suffering severely from the pepper, struck the robber on the head, and Sergeant White covered him with his revolver, and the prisoner then caved in after a severe struggle. The prisoner's name is William Henry Borfield. Upon the prisoner being searched the following articles were found—a knotted bludgeon, gag, piece of rope, piece of soap, a quantity of pepper, and a towel was found on him ; besides the prisoner had blackened his face. Immediately after the prisoner was secured, Sergeant White rushed out of the bank to see if he could find any accomplices, but only picked up a loaded pistol outside the door. It is supposed that there is a gang in town, as Mr Morris saw one or two outside the door.
