J. H. GROCOTT ANOTHER SEWING MACHINE E. W. KNOWLES IS THE APPOINTED AGENT FOR THB NEW WHITE, HORIZONTAL, FEED, NOISELESS, EASY RUNNING, (And without feur ot* contradiction) THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN OK WING "Ayr .\CHINE3 This, the latest claimant for the the position o " Cheapest and Best- in the word " is to bt seen a; the Warehouse of Mr E. W. Knowlrs, Hastings-street, and unquestionably the many ingenious points displayed in the conm ruction render it well worth examining. As a matter of fact the horizontal feed is common to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification of importance. But in the White machine there is this marked improvement on many other varieties—that the feed plate acts on either aide of the needle, f n other words, the work Is pushed along as if by two Aurora Instead of ono. Obviously this tends V> pt o-.luce very oven results, and it enables the operator to *!•*■• along the right or left edge of the fabric i«r, lilwsure. At the sun* time, the arm of the r;iacliina ib at a more than ordi nary height above tbe table, tnd the pressure foot also has a liberal amount of play given to it by the aid of a. woll-coutnved sprinir. A large mass of material could therefore be p-issed over the work table, and thrnugh the machine, without the remotest chance of njury. The entire mechaniam is of the most simple character, and so little motion is there that one may run ths machine—almost without uein(j conscious of the fact. When the main part of the machine is not required to be run—as, for instance, when shuttle bobbins are to be wound —a little spring catch is thrown back, and the sewing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the driving gear. Further, when any given bearing may In the course of time becoue worn, the m«re turning of a screw effects ft refitting of the friction surfaces. One specially ingenious contrivance is displayed in the tension arrangement of the shuttle. 1 ber» are ho holes to be threaded, as is commonly the case; but the thread being wound In and out of a few grooves, a little steel plate popß down, and by the acti-in of a spring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps just the desired strain on the under thread. The tension for the upper thre»d li also automatic. . The machines are now on view, and an inspection is respectfully solicited, when Price lists, etc., and fuller particulars can be obtained at B.
