Ernest Greatrex, the representative of Greatrex and Son, saddlers and ironmongers, of Wellington and Wallsall, England, has been summoned for not furnishing the property tax returns as required under the Property Tax Act. This is the first case laid by the Commissioner, and it will be heard in the course of a day or two.

At the inquest on William Peckham the jury returned a verdict that he came by bis death through the upsetting of a cart. The jury censured the contractor for the bridge repairs for not having the road properly lighted.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday a number of women of ill-fame were charged under the Vagrant Act. His Worship held that prostitution per se is not unlawful, but if accompanied by disorderly or indecent conduct, or anything that grossly shocked the public mind, then it was unlawful. In pronouncing his decision his Worship pointed out that, although the trade defendants were pursuing was not denounced by any law of the land as unlaw--ful, it was a mistake to suppose that it had been made lawful. He bound over the defendants to appear next Tuesday for sentence.

The annual report of the Patent Slip Company shows a credit balance of £2407. The directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 5 per cent.
