Rome of the advantaaes are as follow :- 1. It enables the inexperienced to suspend the motion of the Ma-shine while learning the traad!e action. •2. If the learner starts the treadle motion in the wrong direction, it will not work the Machine, but as soon is it takeo the right direction it puts the Machine in motion. 3. When winding shuttle -bobbins the action cf the Machine is suspends;!, preventing dieairangemonts of the threads and unnecessary wear. This Mechanical principle on which Singer's Machines are built can hardly be improved, an.-l as a proof of this it need onl.v be said that it is about the only Machine imitators Lave endeavored to copy, not only in America, bu-almoin Great Britain and the Continent of Europe. KNCWLES IS THE APPOINTED AGENT FOR THE NEW WHITE, HORIZONTAL, FEED. NOISELESS, EASY RUNNING, (And without fear of contradiction) THE BEST OF ALL KNOWN QEWING •VfACHINES This, the latest claimant for the the position o ' " Cheapest and Best in the world " is to be seen at the Warehouse of Mr E. W. Knocks. Hastings-street, and unquestionably the many ingenious points displayed in the construction render it well worth examining. As a matter of fact the horizontal feed is common to many machines, and the term has therefore no signification of importance. But in the White machine there is this marked Improvement on many other varieties—that the feed plate acts ou either side of the needle. In other words, the work te pushed along as if by two fingers instead of one. Obviously this tends to produce very even remits, and it enables the operator to sew along tho right j or left edge of the fabric at pleasure. At the Bame time, the aim of the machine is at a more thanordi nat y.height above the table, and the pressurofoot also has a liberal amount of play tfiven to It by the aid of a well-contrived sprintr. A large mass of material could therefore be pussed over the work, table, and through the machine, without the remotest chance of biury. The entire mechanism is ot me most Simple character, and ho little friction is , tnero that one may run tho machine—almost with- s out being conscious of the fact. When the main *" part of the machine ia not required to be run—as for instance, when shuttle bobbins are to be wound —a little spring catch is thrown back, and the sew- ' ing mechanism is thereby disconnected from the • driving gear. Further, when any given bearing may m the course of time become worn, the mere turning of a screw effects a refitting of tho friction ZnWi i X T ci f iy in fc' eni °"* contrivance Is uwplayed In the tension arrangement of the shuttle 1 here are no holes to be threaded, as ia commonly the case; but the thread being- wound in and out of th^Ji TOOV f B ' a H , ttle Bfceol P' ato P°PS "own, and by "i the action of a spring which can be made light or heavy at will, keeps just the desired strain on the under thread.
