A five-roomed house at Mornington, owned by C. R. Bowman, and occupied by one Jones, was burned down last night. The insurances are—£2oo on tbe furniture in the South British office, and £100 in the National office on the furniture. The fire was caused by the explo sion of a lamp, and broke out at eleven o'clock last night, and waa got under as speedily as possible. Mr Proudfoct has issued a writ for £20,000 damages against Mr Mackay, his late partner, for alleged defamation of character.
William Insley, a wood cutter, died suddenly at Parakanui on Thursday.
James Green, a groom, of intemperate habits, died in the City Hotel stables last night. He had gode there in a drunken condition, and laid down.
The City Council have effected retrenchment to the extent of £3000 annually.
